Thank you for visiting Aquaponic Designs. We are extremely excited about launching our website about aquaponics. This is a very young science that combines aquaculture with hydroponics. Aquaculture is interchangeable with aquafarming. It is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, prawns, and water plants. Aquaculture systems can be fresh or salt water. Hydroponics, on the other hand, is growing plants in nutrient saturated water systems. So, aquaponics is a combination of the two systems.
How does it work? There is a good symbiotic relationship between plant life and marine animal life. Fish and other marine animals release waste into the water. When the tank is contained, it needs to be filtered in order prevent toxins in the water from contaminating the marine animal life. Conversely, plants utilize by-products produced by aquaculture as a beneficial nutrient solution.
An aquaponics system utilizes plants to filter the water for the aquaculture. The aquaculture provides the hydroponics system with needed nutrients. Thus, the two systems have a great symbiotic relationship. Of course, this is a relatively new science and still developing but it is exciting to those of us that love efficiency. It's a great way to maximize food production in a small space. We are learning more about these systems everyday. We are always interested in feedback from people that are developing and using these systems. Please feel free to contact us anytime:
